Unlocking the Power of Laboratory Informatics: Integrating New Tests, Optimizing Test Ordering, and Leveraging Data Analytics (Full Day)

Sunday, July 28, 2024
9:00 AM – 4:30 PM US Central Time
McCormick Place Chicago

Description

This 6-hour course will provide comprehensive insights into the integration of new tests into Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), optimizing test ordering from Electronic Medical Records (EMR), and utilizing laboratory data for analytics. Participants will learn the significance of these processes and how to practically implement them. The course will blend lectures, interactive sessions, and demos to equip attendees with practical skills and solutions. Through real-world case studies, attendees will gain the expertise to overcome challenges associated with complex instruments and data management, ensuring the success of modern laboratory operations.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for lab supervisors, lab managers (supervisory and/or non-supervisory), medical technologists, pathologists, in-training individuals, and other laboratory professionals overseeing/conducting within this topic.

Prerequisite Knowledge

  • A background in clinical laboratory workflows.
  • Experience in reviewing system level laboratory data using MS Excel.
  • Experience with SQL would also be helpful, but not required.

What to Bring

A fully-charged personal laptop; Chrome browser preferred; pen/pencil, scrap paper.

Learning Objectives

  • Integrate new tests into a laboratory information system, including interfacing with various instruments and ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Optimize laboratory test ordering through the Electronic Medical Record, utilizing clinical decision support tools and understanding patient context.
  • Leverage laboratory data for analytics by setting up data warehousing, Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) processes, and utilizing tools to create dashboards.

Course Outline

  1. Integrating New Tests into the Laboratory Information System Lecture (90 mins.)
This lecture will focus on understanding workflow considerations, tracking requirements, instrument interfacing and middleware rules, and adhering to regulatory guidelines. Participants will be divided into breakout groups and will map out how they would set up the assay workflow from specimen collection to test result, incorporating meaningful tracking information into the system that can be used for real time troubleshooting and overall analytics. The group will also list the data elements required to build the test on a worksheet. Each group will be given an assay implementation scenario to work with throughout the course.

    Break (15 mins.)

  2. Leveraging Laboratory Data for Analytics (75 mins.)
This lecture will be highly interactive, featuring real-world use cases and hands-on experience to ensure participants leave with actionable insights and skills to implement laboratory informatics effectively. Participants will break out into the same groups as session 1 to develop the criteria and display features for dashboards and real-time reporting to efficiently manage their new assay. The groups will have access to real data sets and a business analytics tool, which will allow them to construct dashboards for data analysis.

  3. Using Data Science and Clinical Decision Support to Transform Your Laboratory (90 mins.)
This lecture will demonstrate how labs are harnessing the power of these tools to transform their operations, improve laboratory utilization, reduce costs, and enhance patient care. Each group will list out tools and rules that would help clinicians order their tests and interpret the results appropriately.

    Break (15 mins.)

  4. Group Presentations (75 mins.)
The groups formed throughout the day will pre
    sent their work.
