Data generated from medical laboratory results is a valuable resource of information for clinical decision-making. In addition, laboratories can harness the power of laboratory data to optimize processes that advance the laboratory. Finally, laboratory data can be used to advocate for resources and support changes aimed to improve healthcare delivery.
Although the importance of data is clear, accessing and using data can be complex, especially for the laboratorian without a degree in computer science. This year's SYCL Workshop will provide tools for attendees of all backgrounds to develop the critical skills needed to connect clinical data and laboratory results with the goal of guiding decision-making.
One important skill set that will be highlighted in the session is how to effectively advocate for the laboratory using the technologies available while having zero programming skills. We also aim to educate attendees on the basics of how clinical databases are structured, and how to navigate extracting relevant data to use in clinical and quality improvement projects. Lastly, attendees will participate in engaging activities while learning how to successfully carry out a laboratory information system change.
The workshop will provide attendees with skills and real-world examples of how to better navigate the world of data to successfully guide their laboratories.

Competency assessment and documentation remain some of the most frequently cited areas during hospital surveys and inspections. Retirement and shrinking staff levels, along with the increased use of agency/traveling personnel make compliance with competency requirements even more difficult. Hosted by the Critical and Point-of-Care Testing Division, this forum will cover the differences in accreditation agency requirements, the challenges in assessment for both manual and interfaced point-of-care tests, and the uphill battle of documentation at the proper intervals. Creative solutions, strategies, and best practices will be shared to help improve your compliance consistently and to show how vendors can help.
